The Life & Supreme Sacrifice
Shaheed Jarnail Singh Rathore was born on June 12, 1974, in Mohalla Guru Nanakpura, Bathinda, to his revered mother, Smt. Gurbachan Kaur, and father, Sardar Sohan Singh. Growing up, he was deeply inspired by his father, who dedicated a long, honorable, and disciplined career to the Punjab Police. Driven by this family legacy of serving and protecting the nation, Jarnail Singh felt a powerful calling to join the forces.
He began his primary education at the local Khalsa School. Upon completing his 10+2 education, he immediately enlisted as an SPO. Through absolute dedication, rigorous training, and sheer hard work, he transitioned to the IRB in 1996, and his exceptional skills ultimately earned him a selection into the elite Punjab Police Commando Force in 1998.
In 2002, during a highly sensitive election period, the Punjab Government deployed his elite commando unit to the frontline border region of Village Mandhar in the Rajouri district of Jammu & Kashmir. Stationed a mere two kilometers from the Pakistan border, Commando Jarnail Singh and his fellow jawans established a temporary military camp inside a local school building to secure the region from cross-border threats.
On the night of September 15-16, 2002, heavily armed cross-border terrorists launched a sudden, treacherous ambush on the school camp. Recognizing that 35 of his fellow jawans were resting inside, the terrorists aimed to inflict mass casualties and loot the unit’s armory.
Stationed at the forward post, Commando Jarnail Singh stood his ground completely alone. Armed with fierce bravery, he single-handedly fought off the advancing terrorists for two agonizing hours, preventing them from breaching the camp. During the intense firefight, he successfully shot and severely wounded one of the main attackers in the leg, breaking their offensive momentum.
Under the pitch-black cover of night, the retreating terrorists climbed a nearby hill. Using specialized sniper scopes, they searched the darkness, spotted the reflection of his shining official duty belt, and fired a heavy automatic burst directly at his position.
On September 16, 2002, Commando Jarnail Singh Rathore made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down his life for the sovereignty of India. In his final moments on the soil of Jammu & Kashmir, completely fearless in the face of death, he raised the historic, thunderous battle cry: “Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal!”
